Some colleagues, friends, and even those closest to me thought I was crazy ( maybe they still do 😉) for leaving a comfortable engineering job and the strong brand of Google to join a tiny startup back in 2018. I knew I was trading stability and prestige for uncertainty and upside, but while at Google, a restless voice in my head kept asking, "Is this really it?" I craved more intensity, meaning, and a chance to have a bigger impact, so I took the leap and chose the unconventional path.
Looking back, jumping into the unknown was one of the best decisions of my career. Startups stretched me in ways that larger companies never did. I honed my craft, learned how every decision ties back to customers and the business, and worked alongside people I’d build with again in a heartbeat. That kind of growth and connection is rare, and it changed how I operate forever.
I worked as a founding engineer at two early-stage startups: Akruta (acquired by Apple) and HalloApp (backed by Sequoia Capital). I've also worked at large tech companies like Google, Meta and Amazon. Over the last year, I've been thinking a lot about returning to the startup world. I recently made the leap, and I wrote this post to share why I believe now is a career-defining, critical time in software to explore unconventional paths.
We put in the work – top schools, long hours, countless projects – not just to write clean code, but to build great things, create new products that users love, and someday, maybe even found companies of our own. That’s the dream: to work with exceptional people, solve hard problems, and have fun doing it. For a while, big companies have given us that. But as technology accelerates it’s harder for them to keep up, they’ve grown slower, safer, and more risk-averse, burying real innovation under layers of process and fear of market perception.
Real innovation demands persistence, patience, and a willingness to operate at the edges, where there are many unknowns, risks, and a high degree of discomfort. Tech is no different. You don’t make a dent by playing it safe. You do it by taking bold swings, staying obsessed with the long game, and learning through every iteration. The path less coded offers this – a chance to build with urgency, grow with clarity and unlock the kind of journey that leads not just to great tech, but to iconic companies. This kind of mindset and operating framework has defined Silicon Valley, and it continues to embrace this ethos.
The software industry is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by AI – at a pace and scale unmatched by any previous technological shift. The rules for developing and maintaining systems are being rewritten, indicating a significant paradigm shift. Technology is set to evolve at an unprecedented pace in the coming months and years. This shift favors small, nimble teams – those who can adapt quickly, innovate boldly, and outpace the large tech companies.
In moments like this, the real question is simple: which startup is worth going all in for? For me, it comes down to two things: the people and the problem. Surround yourself with the right people – smart, driven, humble – and you grow faster, take more risks, and build better things. Work on the right problem – deep, hard, and meaningful – and it brings out your best work.
In short, if you’ve ever thought about doing something bold, there’s no better time than now to bet on yourself.
I am excited to announce that I have recently joined Resolve AI.
Resolve AI is building AI agents to handle the complexity of software engineering, so engineers can focus on building, not firefighting. Every engineer and engineering leader feels this pain; at scale, it’s one of the few productivity levers that current technology hasn’t been able to address. A tool that resolves these issues is a game-changer. Our belief is simple: machines should be on-call for humans, not the other way around. It’s a bold vision that every engineer can relate to.
Resolve AI not only fulfills all the criteria I've outlined but exceeds them. I was drawn to Resolve AI not only because of its mission, but also because of:
Ambitious and experienced Founders: I met Spiros and Mayank (founders of Resolve AI) over a year ago when they were just starting up. Both of them are elite builders grounded in clarity and conviction, leaders who prioritize the mission and the team above all else. They bring a rare combination of strong vision, deep domain expertise, and a builder’s mindset, shaped by years of experience and a track record of proven successes.
Strong talent density: Ace hire Ace. Strong people bring in others who raise the bar even higher. This team across every function is precisely that: a group of high-caliber builders who push, support, and inspire each other to play the long game, together.
Culture: Every engineer is empowered to lead, contribute beyond their lane, and influence what we build. Ideas are valued by their clarity, not by titles. We work closely with customers to truly understand their pain, partner with them to shape what’s next, and continuously push ourselves to learn, grow, and raise the bar together.
Problem: We're building Agentic AI for software engineering, reimagining how systems are built, run, and maintained, and freeing engineers from the grind of operational toil. This isn't simply a product; it's an opportunity to pioneer a new category and shape the future of software engineering tools. The potential is immense, and the opportunity is rare.
These aren’t just buzzwords on a recruiting page. I see them in action every day at Resolve AI. A long-term obsession drives everyone here to redefine what's possible in our field. We know the journey won't be easy, but persistence, humility, and conviction are ingrained in our culture.
I believe this experience will further enhance my technical depth and product intuition, giving me the tools to build great products, strong teams, and lasting, impactful companies. Just as important, it’s helping me build a network of exceptional people – the kind you build with not just once, but again and again, across multiple products and ventures in the years to come. I truly believe Resolve AI is one of those rare bets: a place to build something meaningful with people you’d want to work with for decades, and the kind of foundation that enables you to build and launch the next generation of products and even companies in the future.
If you’re an engineer reading this, whether early in your career or a seasoned IC, I urge you to take a moment. Zoom out from the day-to-day routine. Ask yourself: What do I really want to work on? Who do I want to work with? Am I playing it too safe?
Listen to that inner voice encouraging you to embrace new and daunting challenges. Real growth comes from confronting discomfort and learning from those experiences. It arises from tackling ambitious, challenging problems that are intimidating. And it thrives within a team that inspires you to reach your full potential.
The road less coded isn’t easy, but it leads to the most fulfilling journeys. If you're seeking meaning, intensity, and lasting impact, it's the path worth taking. Bet on yourself. Surround yourself with people who raise your game. Take the leap. In the end, you’ll look back and realize: choosing the unconventional path made all the difference.
